The fulfillment after the battle1 how come you can
forgive your enemy?
Case: all the names, institutions, relations are fictional.
Simon(40) is Karate master, who trained and got his black-belt in Okinawa,
where Karate was born and developed, and opened his Dojo in New York. The dojo
had been successful due to Simon’s charismatic instructorship and the
uniqueness of Okinawa Karate. Brian (25) is Simon’s disciple, had been
practicing for 10 years. Simon got famous and had an offer to appear in an
action film, he decided to move to LA. Simon sold the dojo to Brian and
remained as a chief instructor. Brian believed that he had been handed over the
Dojo head position and he could run the dojo under famous Okinawa Karate
school, Jyugo style. However, actually, Simon did not reveal the fact of dojo
sales to his Master Yamashiro located in Okinawa. One day, Simon told Brian
that Simon could not come to NY so often and Brian has to find another Karate
dojo to keep the affiliate ship with the famous Okinawa Karate dojo. Brian got
furious and complained about Simon to Master Yamashiro. Simon knew the fact
that Brian secretly contacted Master and also got very upset and started
criticizing Brian.
Master Yamashiro asked Brian to come to Okinawa to spend some time with
him. Brian followed this instruction and stayed with Master for three months.
After that, Brian changed. Before he looked frustrated, disappointed, and very
nervous but after his stay in Okinawa, he looked peaceful, calm, and serene.
Brian went back to NY then started dojo operation again by bringing and sharing
what he learned from Master. Dojo got active again and many new students
joined.
One day, Simon came to NY dojo to complain about the instructor, Brian. Brian
came closer to Simon and sincerely bowed him. Simon was astonished and told
Brian “Hey, I thought you hated me, didn’t you? ” Brian replied to Simon,
“Master Simon, remember when we met last time and we had a huge argument here.
Yes, at that time, I hated you. You had been the one who I would never forgive.
” Brian told calmly.
“But I stayed with our Master Yamashiro and I completely changed. Master taught
me how to accept my enemy, how to create the harmony in myself. That was really
great experience to me. Without you, Simon, I could never have had such
experience. Look, (showing the students training) they are really good
students, you trained them, you breathed a life into them. I was just handed
over what you created. Thank you Simon, thank you…I feel really fulfilled with
wonderful philosophy.”
Simon got confused, looked uncomfortable in staying there, and got out of the
dojo.
Brian used to be occupied with an idea that he was the victim. He might think
that he should be the one who is deserved to have the help. However, touching
the core philosophy of Japanese martial art illuminated him. Brian understands
the paradox: what he was believing martial art was completely opposite to what
he was seeking.
How Brian changed, what he did at the master and what he learned from master,
as well as what happened to Simon, I would spend some more time to share with
you in near future.
