The process to secure your success

Mr. Inamori* mentioned that the Kyocera’s R&D success ratio is 100 percent as they had never given up until they succeeded. I would like to share the background of this idea and how we can make sure our future success, taking into account Mr. Inamori’s interpretation of this phrase.

Q: What was the back-ground of his idea: never give up till we ‘ve got succeeded?

A: During the development of Kyocera philosophy, Mr. Inamori mentioned that we should commit ourselves to achieve our target, as if we were hunting tribes in Africa.

Q: What do you mean by “hunting tribes in Africa”?

A: One day, he watched the TV program which dealt with an African tribe who persistently pursue the animals and hunt them. First, they found the footprints of animals and figured out how long time ago those animals passed the site. In order for them and their family not to starve, those tribes prepared enough food for the chasing and started their trail to the location where animals were taking rests. They patiently kept their pursuit and found the animals taking rests, then finally hunted them. Mr. Inamori was really impressed with this video and thought that program told exactly the same as he thought about the business administration.

Q: So, do you think we have to pursue our targets as if we were those hunters?

A: Yes, I do. According to Mr. Inamori, we have to have the persistence as do those tribes. Mr. Inamori said Kyocera has had such persistence so that they can say that Kyocera’s R&D project has succeed 100%.

Q: What are the lessons learned from this philosophy?

A: From my point of view, the level of persistence and commitment is quite important to achieve our goals. Looking at our business nowadays, in most of businesses, we have to identify our targets: customers or clients. However, a few business leaders could identify the foot prints and figure out pathways of those clients/customers. We can say they still miss the strong desire toward the success.  Furthermore, by investigating those animals’ behavior and find out the moment when they take rests. Such excellent jobs come from only those hunters strong desire to get outcomes. Therefore, we will be able to succeed and never fail to realize our target. I think this is the tip for win the business under many situations.
