Desire to survive the competition

In Kyocera philosophy, Mr. Inamori *set out a sort of Moses’ ten commandments, which are actually composed of twelve mottos. The principle eight is “ Desire to survive the competition ”. This article explains what this principle means and how we can interpret this motto in our day to day business.

Q: What does this motto imply?

A: Mr. Inamori said leaders are responsible for protecting the company, namely their staffs. In order for them to do this, leaders have always to have strong desire to commit themselves to survive even under the harsh competition. Even though a leader looks like soft, calm, and peaceful person, once the company has got into a danger, he should demonstrate very aggressive stance to protect the company and its people. This is the fundamental criteria that leaders should have.

Q: How can we develop such toughness, to win the harsh competition ?

A: I feel that Kyocera philosophy has been coherently linked each other. Fundamental motto number three is “Hold the strong desire” and number four is “Strive yourself much harder than anyone else”. Those two mottos secure the leaders’ commitment to conduct this number eight. In other words, leaders who are immature in developing strong desire would unintentionally avoid competition.

Q: How come can you tell this? Is it mandatory to develop internal subconscious mind to win the competition?

A: Technically, yes, it is. This is how the subconscious mind works. It ultimately governs our actions, behaviors, and attitudes towards others. Therefore, for you to demonstrate the fighting spirits to others, you may have to remove your subconscious mind that negatively affect your challenge.

Q: How can we remove our negative mind imprinted into our subconscious mind?

A: Clarify our anxieties that we have in our mind. For instance, why we don’t want to fight? Simply because we are afraid of being the looser. We have strong fear for getting defeated. What are the fundamental parts of your fear? You may be afraid of critics by others or by your staffs? Some may say you are coward, idiot, and incompetent when you get defeated. However, think about your child who trains hard to win the running competition at the school. Even though he loses, would you think he deserves to have such negative words? Of course not, and how about others? Would you like to look down upon those who lose the competition despite of their hard working? Maybe not. As long as for the hard worker, you may feel like admire him, or impressed with him. That’s why Mr. Inamori stresses the interaction of each one of mottos. If you have strong desire, strive yourself, you can spontaneously demonstrate your courage to protect others. If you can’t show your challenge, you would think about your subconscious mind and your endeavors.

This is the process of anxiety clarification. By taking such approach, leaders can gradually remove their mental blocks and come to commit themselves to the competition in a business world.

Q: So overall, what are the messages from this motto?

A: Challenging spirits are important however, we have seldom learned how to develop those spirits in our mind. Clarifying our anxiety and analyze it may work to remove our mental blocks and change our subconscious mind. This also works for maintaining strong desire and striving ourselves to achieve our goals.
