What is the underling concept of Pricing?

Mr. Inamori* ,in Kyocera philosophy, spent 35 pages to explain about this philosophy: Pricing is the principle mission for the top management to conduct. Why did such pragmatic super management stress this philosophy? I think there are two intentions: Mr. Inamori believes this is quite important for the business leaders and he also believes that this is the biggest difference between so-called ordinary top leaders and he, Mr. Inamori. I would like to spend some time to elaborate more on Mr. Inamori’s pricing guideline and underlying value of that.

Q: What do you think is the principle value of pricing that Mr. Inamori has stressed?

A: Value oriented, I come up with this as the core concept, from reading Mr. Inamori’s words. Let me tell you an example. Once before, at his workshop in his early dates as Seiwajuku leader, he told participants, the presidents of middle-small companies in greater Kyoto area, “Listen gentlemen, think about the character “making profit”, this is composed of the two separate characters which comprehensively means religious followers .” Let me explain more on it. In Japanese, we call Moukeru, the action to make profit. Moukeru in Chinese (Japanese calligraphic figure), is composed of two parts: Shin and Ja. Shin means trusting and believing in religious sense, and Ja means a person or members. As a combination of both Shin and Ja, this calligraphic figure represents religious believer, follower, or even under extreme case, fanatic followers toward a charismatic leader. Mr. Inamori wanted to explain that from the ancient time of China, people understood that we can get profit as we grow our followers.

Q: So do you mean that making profit is creating your followers?

A: Partially yes, Mr. Inamori used this example to encourage his disciples to make their clients the loyal customers of their products and services. This is not a superficial commercialism, but he intended to demonstrate much depth in his context. ”Please think about the profile of religious followers, what is the key for them to blindly trust the leader? ” Mr. Inamori might want to ask such question to the participants.

Q: Thus, what is the key for them to blindly trust the leader ?

A: From my point of view, there are two points: saving their lives and showing the direction to be followed in their lives. People tend to respect someone who actually saves their lives under difficult circumstances and get them out of the troubles.

Q:Therefore, do you think service/ goods provider have to be the leader in religious sense as well?

A: By providing goods or services, a company or a provider could bring quite high value to the customer/ client as he/she has been well fulfilled and enlightened.

Q: How is making followers associated with the best pricing?

A: When you get your followers, you can sell your goods or services as its value. As long as your followers find your delivery to be valuable, worth doing, or worth listening, the cost or expense does not matter. They would not care much about the price as they have already found the highest value of what you have provided them, your followers.

Q: Could you justify your price?

A: Some say this should not be fair pricing, however, Mr. Inamori said even though you charged the highest price, as long as your client is willing to pay that price, there is no tricky part and the pricing can be justified.

Q: What is the lesson learned from this episode?

A: We, no matter which industry we belong to, have to create our loyal followers, who believe the value of our goods and services. In order for a business to last for long-term, those goods and services should never disappoint those loyal clients. For us to secure the quality of our goods and service, as Mr. Inamori encourages us, we have to improve our skills and competencies as the saver of their lives. At least we should keep our endeavor to be respected and trusted professionals. At least I have been seeking for this, as the top management of Abrils, the real estate investment advisory.
