Does “competency oriented” always work?

見出し、タイトル、Orientedは○○重視、○○主義にあたる単語です。

In his Seiwajuku workshop, a president demonstrated his struggle as a business leader, and Mr. Inamori* shared his views on the HR management, how to maintain good and capable resources. I would like to demonstrate that leaders’ story and, Mr. Inamori’s view and the motto to be shared.

Q: What is the story that business leader demonstrated?

A: He wanted to develop a new business, sought for a smart, capable, and well- connected guy but this created conflicts among existing staffs in his company. They were very much against a new sectorial leader who had eventually been recruited by the president, that leader. Many of existing staffs left the company. Due to the lack of resources, the new business did not go well and the capable guy consequently left the company as well. The president demonstrated this as his fail case.

Q: What was the advice that Mr. Inamori gave this leader?  

A: He demonstrated the bad example of communication.

“Look, I would like to grow this company and have just decided to hire a new capable guy.”

“So, how would you consider his function? ” one of his staff might ask.

“Well, of course, he would be my right arm!”

“Then what happen to us?”

“You may have to support and report to him, the new guy…. I know our target can not be achieved by you, guys, sorry to say that, but it’s true…”

Mr. Inamori demonstrated above as a bad communication example. Many of existing staffs would be unhappy with this and lead the company disharmonized.

Q: So what is the example of a good communication?

A: Mr. Inamori demonstrated the good example as follows;

“Look, I would like to grow this company and thinking of hiring a new guy with a certain skill set. He would be a leader of the team. What do you think? If you guys are reluctant to work with that guy, I am fine with it. We would remain as a middle/ small company for good. If you all are-narrow minded person, I have nothing to tell more….”

“Wait, you have always been telling us to be the number one in this industry. So bring that guy, and we are willing to work with him, we will commit ourselves to creating a good team with that guy….”

“Ok, according to your wish, we would hire that new guy, as a sectorial leader..”

Q: Does this sound a manipulation? Did Mr. Inamori manipulate his staffs?

A: No he didn’t. He said, due to the affection towards staffs, he could tell those words. However, he said, all the capable guys whom he had recruited to Kyocera, had left the company. Those who remained were the ones who had been patiently accepted new capable leaders and committed themselves to working with that competent leaders.

Q: Why this happened?

A: In Kyocera philosophy, Mr. Inamori sometimes reiterates, leader should be very much humble, well dedicated, and with respectable personality. Competence in proficiency is not enough. Talented people are, most of the cases, ambitious and easily get attracted with financial rewards, fame, or power, etc.

Therefore, those who had been counted as remained ones are opposite; less ambitious, humble, less hungry for all those incentives. However, all of them are, without any exemptions, honest, diligent, and hard working guys even though they are less aggressive in the business world.

Q: So, what is Mr. Inamori’s conclusion?

A: Kyocera’s HR platform is very strong because it has been developed by people who well understood the philosophy and working hard to improve his skills, even though they don’t look as too smart guys…

Q: What is the lesson learned from this episode?

A: I have found from my experience, smart, capable, and well competent guy could not be “used” in a certain framework. Given such risks, training honest staffs with ordinary skills would be more effective for a company to survive over middle to long term.
