この文章の流れを最初に伝えます。

In Kyocera philosophy, Mr. Inamori *set out a sort of Moses’ ten commandments, which are actually composed of twelve mottos. The principle seven is “ Management requires strong determination”. This article explains what this principle means and how we can interpret this motto in our day to day business.

Q: What does this motto imply?

A: Mr. Inamori said Management is a sort of a form where all the managements’ desires, wishes and intentions are comprehensively integrated. Therefore, once you’ve set out a sort of target, first you have to have a strong determination to realize that objective. Your intention should be very strong and sustainable enough to drive you achieve that goal. This is for sure the fundamental action to be taken by the top leader.

Q: Once the leader has a strong determination, what would be the next step? Holding determination is not enough, right?

A: No, it isn’t. Mr. Inamori said that holding your strong determination towards the goal is not sufficient. The next step, according to Mr. Inamori, is sharing such determination with your staffs. In order for a company to achieve that goal, management should share such targets with staffs. By doing this, each one of staff should look at the same direction and each one demonstrates strong commitment of himself/ herself to achieve such goal.

A: Not in this number seven section but in the very beginning, he demonstrated the ultimate objective of corporate mission. In Kyocera philosophy, this important motto has always been the same; the company, Kyocera exists to fulfill all the employee not only materially but also mentally. As the top management, what Mr. Inamori has been conducting was to have his staffs realize that this company is for your fulfillment. Therefore, the more energy and time Mr. Inamori spent, the more understanding and positive responses he got. If the company, contrary to its business mission, obviously seeks the goal to fulfill top management or a part of shareholders, none of employees would commit themselves to achieve that target. This has unfortunately been seen in many companies in the world. Even though they raise great and admirable missions and visions, at the end of the day, they ended up chasing personal interests of top management and shareholders. Therefore, people easily got less motivated and never dedicated themselves to achieve the corporate goals, which have already been turned into fake missions for employees. This is an example how the wishes of both managements and employees were ultimately mismatched. To avoid such outcome, Mr. Inamori, from the very beginning, reiterates that the determination should be shared.

Q: So does this motto ultimately indicate the corporate goal?

A: Not only for the corporate goals, but also small targets set out in the daily business operation. Nevertheless, in order for you, the top management, to convince your staffs to look at the same direction with the same passion as you have, you have to tell them that the ultimate objective of the business and how this is associated with the personal fulfillment of them.

Q: So overall, what are the messages from this motto?

A: Management should set out the ultimate objective which can be shared with employees, always motivate them with repeating that objective, and have them passionately look at the same direction as does the management. The business mottos are coherent one from the other.
