Demonstrate your courage in the management
Q: What does this motto imply?
A: Mr. Inamori said leaders demonstrate their courage in conducting management. In order for them to conduct the right decision and actions, the highest priority is the company’s prosperity over the long term. If you take such a decision that benefits your company, someone would get upset and treat you badly. No matter how hard reaction you may have, you must have the courage to demonstrate your fair spirits.
Q: How have you demonstrated this under your business practice?
A: Almost 25 years ago, when I was qualified as an appraiser, my supervisor asked me to show my courage to put the price requested by the client. I was very much uncomfortable with it. When I was working for non-Japanese bank and discussed with my English supervisor over the valuation. He mentioned that we should point out the highest or lowest point in a range where the price is recognized as the market price. Since then, I have been demonstrating my professional opinion, especially for non-Japanese players, that I can show them the price within a market range. I also think that I should have said that when I was working for a Japanese consulting company.
Q: In your past experience, has this principle supported your client?
A: Yes, it has. Sometimes I have found extremely high/ low purchase prices. There must have been some reasons behind those transactions. However, prudent investors in both debt and equity sides, have been interested in listening to our analysis. I have been proud of delivering such professional output.
Q: What is the lessons learned from this motto?
A: As a professional, maintain fair attitudes, rely on your sense established by professional ethical value. This is the best way to build up a trust with your client.
