Altruism – Omoiyari-first

In Kyocera philosophy, Mr. Inamori *set out a sort of Moses’ ten commandments, which are actually composed of twelve mottos. The principle eleven is “Altruism – Omoiyari-first ”. This article explains what this principle means and analyze the current phenomena taking into account this principle, and how to apply this motto to the real estate industry.

Q: What does this motto imply?

A: Mr. Inamori said in business, you should always think about your counterparts, what are his/her wish, concerns and objectives. In Japanese , we use this word “Omoiyari”. Omoiyari is hard to translate into English. You may have to think about others first and do whatever thing that your counterpart wishes to have and refrain from doing whatever action that your counterpart want to avoid. This deep consideration is called Omoiyari. “Omori” means consider others and “yari” represents thorough and completely.

In this philosophy, you should always pay attention to what would be the best consequences for your counterpart. In other words, “He who gives to another bestows on himself”. This is the proverb found in English. However, I feel this can be interpreted in depth. The energy that you spend for others’ good would be amplified, accumulated, and turned back to yourself as a form of benefit or reward. Therefore, in doing business, you should always give your selfish mind away and devote yourself to your clients and your people’s benefit.

Q: However, we can’t always be generous in order for us to be profitable, how can we keep the balance?

A: Maintain always the long-term view. Do not end up with being narrow minded or seeking one time profit. Taking into account the long-term prosperity, figure out what would be the most beneficial to both parties: your counterpart and your company.

Q: How can we develop such long-term view?

A: From psychological approach, investigating yourself or looking into your subliminal mind works for you to have a fair and impartial mind. For instance, meditation or Zen is the practice to find your own ”true-self”. True-self represents your mind condition where no biased or impartial views has intervened in your position. Thus, your rewritten mind after analyzing your subliminal mind can be identified as the clear and ultimately balanced one. By doing such training, you would be able to develop a sort of long-term view.

Q: So in real estate filed, how can we use such revised subliminal mind?

A: We can bring that mindset to analyze the highest and best use, the potential users or occupiers, the transition of the property as well as the area and neighborhood. Such dynamic views also work for developing master plan designing. We shall of course forget about the selfish mind and short-termism attitude and consider the benefit to the society.
